Foreign Relation Takes A Turn For The Worst

Citizens are beginning to express their growing concerns over the increased tensions between America and foreign nations. Foreign relation are worsening with each passing day. It started with Britain being a difficult nation to establish a mutual friendship between. It has now escalated to being three nations that are hostile to America. Strained relationships have extended surprisingly, to both Spain and France.

For about eight years, Britain has refused to send a minister to America. Being undeniably resentful towards us, she has even declined to make a commercial treaty or to repeal its ancient Navigation Law, leaving merchants trapped between not having British customers and not being able to trade as freely as he wishes, with other nations. Britain has also officially shut off their profitable West Indian trade from the colonies. This has in effect, stifled the economy. As many of the other patriotic Americans have said, Congress should force the British into line by imposing restrictions on their imports to America.

What is so shocking, is the fact that Spain is an enemy of Britain, but yet still it does support a country that is another enemy of Britain. In fact Spain's attitude towards Americans is quite the opposite. It is filled with openly unfriendly comments and actions. Many people are not however, concerned with Spain's attitudes, but rather they are concerned with Spain's action and Spain's most recent action has infuriated a lot of citizens. Spain has closed the river to American commerce and then added the fact that she has claim to large areas, north of Gulf of Mexico, that had been given to Americans in 1783. Even America's former ally, France, has turned against us and has begun demanding repayment of the money that was loaned out for and during the war.
